Heirs’ property, or land and other assets passed from one generation to the next without the benefit of clear title, has been described as a major impediment to individual and community development for African Americans, particularly in the rural South. While the reasons for heirs’ property are many, including mistrust of the legal system and overt take- away schemes from local officials, little research has been conducted to examine the impact of heirs’ property at the community level.
