Growth of the camping market in the Northeast

Informally Refereed

Abstract

Almost like an atomic explosion, the number of commercial campgrounds in the Northeast mushroomed 800 percent between 1961 and 1967. During this same period, the number of public campgrounds increased by only 40 percent. The pattern of commercial and public campground growth in the Northeast was studied over a 6-year period to find how such growth may relate to geographic features, population distribution, and existing campground locations. This information provides insight into future campgroundamarket growth trends, and may be useful in developing recreation programs and policies.
