Abstract

Since 1983, area of timberland in North Georgia has decreased by 5 percent and now totals almost 3.0 million acres. Nonindustrial private owners account for two-thirds of the region's timberland. The annual rate of planting experienced a fourfold increase over the previous rate and averaged 22,000 acreas each year. Volume of softwood growing stock fell by 6 percent to 1.9 billion cubic feet. Volume of hardwood growing stock increased by more than 7 percent to 2.9 billion cubic feet. Hardwood growth was down by 4 percent to 77 million cubic feet. Softwood removals increased 67 percent, exceeding growth by 32 percent. Hardwood removals averaged 45 million cubic feet and exceeded growth by 69 percent. Annual mortality of growing stock increased for both softwoods and hardwoods now totals 36 million cubic feet.
