Abstract

There is a limited amount of research focusing on female forestland owners. In looking at female forestland owners as a group researchers are often left with more questions than answers. What is the role of these landowners in the forestry sector? How do female forestland owners manage their lands? Do female forestland owners possess unique characteristics, needs, and interests? From the limited research available, it appears that female forestland owners do express some similarities; they are older, own small amounts of acreage, and have a more pronounced interest in ecological management (Warren 2003, Lidestav and Ekstrom 2000). This paper characterizes female forestland owners in their land management practices and their accessibility to knowledge dealing with their land. The data consists of information received from 39 semi-structured personal interviews with female forestland owners in rural Alabama.
