Abstract
Abstract.Responses of understory vegetation to season of bum were followed in young, naturally established, stands of longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.). Treatments included biennial burns in winter, spring, and summer, plus a no-bum check. Groundcover biomass was measured before treatment and again 7 and 9 years later. Total green biomass on the forest floor was not significantly affected by treatment, but its components were. Green woody biomass constituted 91 percent of the total on unburnsd and 49 percent on bumed plots. Woody understory vegetation and grasses were unaffected by season of bum. Forbs were most abundant with winter and summer bums, and legumes, with winter and spring burns.
