Market Source Data

The information in the worksheet market.xls was assembled to place into context southern pine beetle damage estimates. The southern pine beetle has preferences for particular softwood species in ways that differ from the timber market. Hence numbers are provided for a range of inventory and harvesting aggregations. These data are all derived from state reports from the USDA Forest Service's Forest Inventory and Analysis Program. Harvest data are derived from Timber Product Output surveys of mills. Inventory numbers come from their periodic survey of forested plots across all ownerships. Host species included the following pine species: loblolly, Virginia, shortleaf, sand, pond, Table Mountain, and spruce.

Fields in the workbook are defined below. See Harvest and Inventory pages for more information on methods used to generate these data.
