Damages Source Data

John M. Pye

The state level data on damages from southern pine beetle extends the data series described at http://www.barkbeetles.org/spb/index.HTML. This edition of the data extends that series to include the years 1997 through 2004. Volumes of timber killed and salvaged are provided by two sets of sources. For infestations on National Forest Lands, information was provided by Steve Clarke. For infestations on other lands, information was provided by each state’s southern pine beetle specialist, as listed in the Methods Section. See comments in the Excel spreadsheet damages.xls for notes on specific irregularities or explanations of alternative sources for price information and also to see the formulas for calculated values.

Tables showing Southwide and state level dollar damages report damages adjusted to constant dollars. This was done using the producer price index for lumber and wood products obtained in February 2006 from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The reported nominal prices were multiplied by the index value for 2004 and then divided the index value for that price's year.
