Hse Receives Distinguished Service Award
On August 27, 2012, Southern Research Station (SRS) scientist Dr. Chung-Yun Hse received the Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Society of Wood Science and Technology (SWST). The award was presented during the SWST annual convention in Beijing, China. Hse received the award “in recognition of his dedication and distinguished service to the profession of Wood Science and Technology and the furtherance of the goals and objectives of the Society.”
Hse is a forest products technologist with the SRS Utilization of Southern Forest Resources unit based in Pineville, LA, and has conducted wood science research for more than 51 years, 45 of which have been with the Forest Service. He has been instrumental in establishing international collaborations between the United States, China, and Japan and has authored over 200 scientific papers and six patents. Hse has received numerous awards and recognitions and has edited proceedings for five symposiums, yet–according to him–his greatest reward is the opportunity to mentor young scientific talent. Hse has hosted 50 international students and visiting scientists over the past 25 years, each staying from one and a half to two years.
