U.S. Forest Service

The U.S.
Forest Service consists of three branches: National
Forest System, State
and Private Forestry, and Forest
Service Research. The research branch consists of 6 research stations,
the International
Institute of Tropical Forestry and the Forest
Products Lab. The Wildlife Habitat and Silviculture Lab (WHSL) is
one of 25 Research Work Units within the Southern
Research Station, which is headquartered in Asheville, North Carolina.
Currently, WHSL research is conducted in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Florida, and throughout the Southern Appalachians. In addition to our laboratory on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University, we administer the Stephen F. Austin Experimental Forest, which is part of the Angelina National Forest. Because most of our Texas research involves threatened, endangered, or sensitive species, most of our research is now conducted off the Experimental Forest. In addition to its use for research, the Experimental Forest is home to the East Texas Plant Materials Center and the SFA Interpretive Trail System, which is being developed cooperative by the WHSL, Stephen F. Austin State University (through the Arthur Temple College of Forestry), and the National Forests and Grasslands in Texas. |
Our Mission is to quantify relationships between wildlife habitat values and forest management strategies and to incorporate these findings into management planning processes. |
