Professional Background:
I started with the Outdoor Recreation and Wilderness Assessment Group as a marketing research specialist in 1990. While working with the unit in a non-science capacity, I became interested in environmental sociology, specifically the meanings African-Americans attach to wild, unstructured areas. I coordinated an ethnic recreation research project with Florida A&M University, the objective of which was to compare rural African-American and Anglo-American perceptions of wildland recreation areas. The study also compared black and white visitation rates and participation in wildland recreation activities.
Research Interests:
My primary research interests include environmental meaning and perception. In particular, I would like to use qualitative and ethnographic methods to examine cross-cultural perceptions of nature
