Professional Background:

I began as a Research Assistant at the Southeastern Forest Experiment Station in Asheville, North Carolina, from 1966-1967, and in 1967 was promoted to Research Social Scientist. From 1971-1976, I was Coordinator of Research and Faculty of Recreation Economics at North Carolina State University. In 1976, I came back to the Forest Service as a Project Leader in Clemson, South Carolina. A year later I was asked to become Project Leader in Athens, Georgia, and have been in Athens since that move in 1977. The project unit's emphasis has changed several times. In 1977, it was Urban Environmental Research in the South; in 1981, it became Urban Forestry and Recreation Assessment Research; and in 1987, it became Recreation and Wilderness Assessment Research.

Research Interests:

Outdoor recreation trends, social trends, environmental attitudes, and what makes old Volkswagons keep running!

Current Projects:

1. The National Survey on Recreation and the Environment (NSRE 2000) is the seventh of the Nation's continuing National Recreation Surveys; the first of which was in 1960.
   
2. Human Dimensions of Natural Resources Management with an emphasis on providing concepts, approaches and access to the social sciences for resource managers
