Land and Culture in the South Carolina Lowcountry: Resident Responses to Proposed Land Development

Brief Description:
Expected results will provide data on citizen awareness of and involvement in decisions about development on private lands. There has
been much controversy and speculation regarding proposed development and the possible consequences of such action in the Seewee to
Santee area. However, no methodological community surveys have been conducted to better understand resident views on these possible changes. Data
produced would provide science-based information to aid municipalities in the Seewee to Santee
region and larger Charleston county make more informed decisions regarding proposed development and re-zoning petitions.
Objectives:
- Examine rural residents' (including both Gullah and White communities) knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions
about proposed urban development into the northern portion of Charleston county, South Carolina;
- Address the procedural component of environmental justice as it relates to stakeholder participation in decisions about
public land management.
