Beginning/Ending Dates: August 1, 2003 thru December 31, 2004
Brief Description:
Previous research on the topics of wilderness condition and
values will be collected. Information is to be synthesized to identify salient topics and create
a presentation format usable by researchers and managers. Additional questions and hypotheses
are to be added as an understanding of the available data develops.
Objectives:
- The objective of this project is to assess the state of knowledge and provide up-to-date descriptions
of the status, condition and value of areas within the National Wilderness
Preservation System. Information will be organized by the individual area, nationally, and by Forest
Service Region. A framework will be developed to categorize each wilderness based on condition
and economic and non-economic values accrued. The data will provide a collective vision of the
values realized nationwide from the system. Besides answering questions regarding individual
areas, this information can also be used to generate broader questions regarding wilderness research.
