While increasing population has implications for forests, the distribution and the demographic profile of the population also have important implications for the structure of the forested landscapes and the mix of forest goods and services that are demanded.

This chart shows how the population density profile of the South has changed over time. Most interesting is that the area with an urban profile ( people per square mile) has more than tripled between 1950 and 1990.
