Notes: For the region as a whole, the area of timberland in the South decreased somewhat from the 1960s to the 1970s. Since then there has been essentially no net loss of timberland (the red bar) and of other types of forestland (yellow bar).
Data Source: These are forest inventory data compiled in several “benchmark” years for the RPA Assessment (and other assessments conducted by the USDA Forest Service in earlier years). The inventory data are compiled from the most recent forest surveys at each benchmark year.
