This datasets summarizes the total aboveground forest carbon for all FIA-sampled counties of the southern U.S.
Purpose:
The intent was to illustrate the amount of carbon in southern forests on a per area basis.
Supplemental_Information:
This information was estimated by Linda Heath and James Smith of the USDA Forest Service, Northeastern Research Station, as part of a study they have in preparation.

The information is based on the FIA Eastwide Database, downloaded in 2000. Generalized biomass equations were applied to estimate biomass for each tree, and a percent carbon factor was applied. The resulting carbon was aggregated across the landscape, weighted by plot area. The methods will be described further in a publication in preparation by Smith and Heath.
