Notes:
This study found that the capture rates of three species were significantly increased in harvested treatments compared with the control.
The capture rates of one species, the marbled salamander was significantly decreased by harvesting. SMZs appeared to be acting as refugia.
A subsequent study sponsored by Temple-Inland found that the marbled salamanders numbers were increasing in the harvested treatments 2-5 years after harvesting (K. J. Irwin. 1997. Herpetofaunal community response to timber harvest practices in an east Texas bottomland hardwood forest. M.S. Thesis, Texas A&M Univ.)
