Notes:
With regard to land use and timber supply models, our research reveals significant relationships between mills and management intensity that could be used to refine spatially explicit timber supply models. Specifically, using an index of site quality, steepness of slope, average mill distances by mill types within a spatial unit, more accurate forecasts of the probability that land will be devoted to a pine plantation or managed intensively for forest products might be possible. The results also show how optimal harvest ages probably are linked to mill locations, site quality, and land form, so inventory-based models of timber supply might also be refined using indices of these variables for spatial units of prediction.
