Current Research:

Current Research:
Kas's current research focuses on practical nursery aspects of growing forest and conservation seedlings in containers. He is investigating the effectiveness of copper coatings and hot water soaks to reduce levels of root rot pathogens on reused containers, seedling growth in various growing media, the impacts of nursery cultural practices on the genetic variation of crops, and the value of using exponential fertilization techniques to reduce nitrogen discharge from nurseries. Kas is also currently assisting with the writing of Chapter 7 of the Container Tree Nursery Manual and is editor-in-chief of the Native Plants Journal http://www.nativeplantnetwork.org/.

Collaborative Research:

Collaborative Research:
Kas joins the USDA Forest Service after 15 years of work at the University of Idaho Forest Research Nursery (http://www.uidaho.edu/seedlings), the only state nursery operated by a land grant university. The unique blend of seedling production with a commitment to research provided a venue for Kas to publish over 90 papers (refereed, general technical, and extension) in concert with USDA Forest Service Forest Health Protection, Cooperative Forestry, and Rocky Mountain Research Station; USDA Agricultural Research Service; regional forest nurseries; and Idaho Department of Lands.
