Research Information

Education:

B.Sc., Carleton University, Honors Biology, 1979; M.P.M., Simon Fraser University, Forest Pest Management, 1984; Ph.D., Simon Fraser University, Forest Entomology, 1991

Current Research:

Development of integrated pest management (IPM) programs for insect pests of intensive forestry in cone and seed orchards, nurseries and plantations. The emphases are on impact assessments and the use of behavior-modifying semiochemicals.Specific topics include coneworms in loblolly pine seed orchards, cone beetles in white pine cone seed orchards, reproduction weevils and Nantucket pine tip moth in plantations, and diversity assessments of arboreal beetles relative to silvicultural treatments.

Collaborative Research:

Involved with numerous collaborators from industry, academia and government agencies on pest issues concerning intensive forestry. The goal is to provide clients with the best available information on specific pest issues and the means to increase our understanding in areas of uncertainty using an adaptive management framework.Current issues include the control of acorn weevils in red oak seed orchards, impact assessments of Nantucket pine tip moth in loblolly pine plantations, pesticide application rates for pests in pine seed orchards, evaluations of trapping protocols for invasive species, and seed loss estimates for seed bugs in pine seed orchards.
