Research Information

Education:

B.S., University of Missouri, Columbia, Forest Management, 1971; M.S., University of Missouri, Columbia, Forest Soils, Fire Effects, 1974; Ph.D., University of Washington, Seattle, (under D.W. Cole and C.C. Grier; linkages between magnitude and distribution of net primary productivity and nutrient cycles), 1982

Current Research:

Primary research interests lie in the study of nutrient transfers, accumulations, and distributions within forest ecosystems and their relationships to biological productivity, biomass and carbon distributions. There is a special interest in study of fine litter and wood decomposition and the interaction between substrate quality factors and the micro-environment in regulating this process. These interests are linked to interests in how transfers influence and are related to similarities and differences in genus or species specific nutrient cycling strategies, stand nutrition/fertility, and perturbations such as fire, thinning, and gap formation.
Current research focuses on the above interests within southern bottomland hardwood forest communities.I am an investigator and the site coordinator for the Iatt Creek Ecosystem Management Project.

Collaborative Research:

My interests lie in better understanding southern bottomland hardwood communities and linkages to soil-site factors and adjacent plant communities.I am interested in comparative studies of leaf litter decomposition and nutrient mineralization in differing stand and environmental conditions.I would welcome the opportunity to include more measures of both substrate quality and the micro-environment and would like to utilize some new approaches to address hypotheses.I would also welcome the opportunity to continue previous work in fine root productivity, fire influences, stand nutrition and soil site relationships.Research dealing with intensive culture of hardwoods is of personal interest due to my background and the chance to test our knowledge of how species and soils respond to intensive treatments. In ongoing research we have developed a solid GIS base for our study area.I would welcome the chance to work with others to better describe surface water storage capacities and other hydrologic characteristics of the area.
