Current Research: |
| Research related to seed production involves maturation, collection, dormancy, presowing treatments and their influence on seedling production.Efforts are underway to improve seedling quality in container and bare-root nursery facilities.Comparisons of seedling establishment relationships to seedling type, container or bare-root, are being conducted.Establishment success is being related to seedling morphology and physiology, particularly root condition.Modeling approaches are being developed to predict environmental and cultural factors that influence seedling production of southern pine nurseries.Repellents for use in direct seeding of the southern pines, especially ones that are environmentally acceptable are being tested.Evaluations are underway to evaluate the physiology of southern pine stand responses to silvicultural practices, including above- and below-ground parameters. |
Collaborative Research: |
| A number of research activities are underway that support the Southern Research Station's Strategic Plan and Cross-cutting theme, "Sustainability and Productivity of Southern Pine Ecosystems."These include: seed and seedling physiology, particularly aspects that relate to establishment success; model development related to simulating nursery production of southern pine seedlings; studies of above- and below-ground physiology that relate to response of southern pine stands to silvicultural practices. |
