Research Information

Education:

B.S., University of Georgia, Forest Resources, 1979; M.S., University of Georgia, Forest Ecology, 1989

Current Research:

Plant species diversity and response to disturbance - canopy gaps, silvicultural treatments; Above- and below-ground carbon cycling - respiration of plant components as they are affected by environmental factors; Above-ground and forest floor nutrient pools - shifts in pools over time on sites receiving the fell and burn prescription; Prescribed fire - consumption of woody fuels as it relates to fire intensity; Long-term litter and wood decomposition experiment (Long-term Ecological Research [LTER]) - a 10 year reciprocal decomposition study involving 28 sites in North and Central America, and Puerto Rico, each using leaf litter and fineroot material from common species, Canopy gap dynamics - effects of small scale disturbances on forest processes with emphasis on populations and microclimate; Ecology of Rhododendron maximum - relative to above- and below-ground causes of competitive exclusion of woody species; Long-term effects of Hurricane Opal in the southern Appalachians - pit and mound topography and its contribution to tree replacement processes; Long-term forest stand dynamics in the southern Appalachians - recruitment, growth, and mortality in opposing watersheds; Plant water relations and phytoremediation of groundwater pollutants - water use by eastern cottonwood planted on a dry site in central Texas for the removal of a groundwater pollutant; Functional diversity in southern Appalachian forests - examination of the affects of the removal of forest understory components.

Collaborative Research:

Plant water relations; prescribed fire; canopy gap dynamics; open to other areas, as well.
