Shooting Ranges

To prepare for a season of safe hunting, or to line up the sights of your rifle, head for one of the four shooting ranges on the Daniel Boone National Forest. All ranges are open year round. For information about hunting, visit our hunting page.

Note: Keno and Appletree Shooting Ranges are free to Golden Age, Access, and Eagle passport holders and any passenger in the vehicle. However, the passports must be displayed on the dashboard or rear view mirror of their vehicle. The passport holder must be prepared to provide a picture ID to a Forest Service official upon request. A clear plastic holder to display the passport are available at the local Forest Service office.

Appletree | Whitman Branch | Keno | Clear Creek | Safety Rules

Appletree Range: Stearns District

Description 2 large sheltered benches, 2 skeet boxes, 1 target board each at 25, 50, 75 and 100 yards, long rifle loading supports at each bench.
Fees Day Use Hang Tag $3.00
Directions 1.4 miles south of the junction of US 27 and KY 478 in McCreary County

Whitman Branch Range: London District

Description 5 shooting benches with 2 lanes at 100 yards, 1 lane at 50 yards, and 2 lanes at 25 yards. Blocks for hanging targets at the end of each lane. Skeet shooting prohibited.
Fees None
Directions From I-75 at London (Exit 38), take KY 192 west for 14.2 miles, turn left on KY 1193, go 5 miles, crossing Laurel River Lake Dam. 1 mile past dam, turn right on Forest Road 4055 for 1/2 mile.

Keno Shooting Range: Somerset District

Description 50 yard pistol range, 100 yard rifle range. Surfaced lanes to targets and shooting benches. Handicapped accessible.
Fees Day Use Hang Tag or pay at site $3.00
Directions From Somerset take US 27 south about 10 miles to KY 751. Then turn right about 5 miles and follow the signs.

Clear Creek: Morehead District

Description 4 shooting tables and four targets for both pioneer and modern weapons. Posts for hanging targets at 25, 50, 100 and 200 yards.
Fees $5 per vehicle up to 5 person per day (excess in vehicle or walk  in $1 per person per day)
Directions From Salt Lick, turn right on KY 211, go 3.5 miles to Forest Road 129, turn left and go 2.7 miles past Clear Creek Furnace to Forest Road 909. Turn right on 909, parking will be 1/2 mile on left.

Obey all posted range safety rules.

  • Do not enter, use, or remain in the area between sunset and sunrise.
  • Do not enter or use the area for any purpose other than target shooting.
  • Do not fire while persons are down range.
  • Do not enter the area located behind the backstop, which has been designated as a safety zone by the placement of "Entry Prohibited" signs.
  • SHOOT YOUR FIREARM IN A SAFE MANNER. Always point the muzzle of your firearm in a safe direction.
  • ALL FIREARMS MUST BE IN A SAFE CONDITION (action open and unloaded) WHEN ENTERING OR EXITING THE RANGE. Load firearms only when you are at the firing line, downrange is clear and you are ready to shoot.
  • SHOOT ONLY FROM THE FIRING LINE, DOWNRANGE, AT TARGETS.
  • CHECK WITH THE OTHER SHOOTERS TO BE SURE THAT ALL FIREARMS ARE UNLOADED AND GROUNDED (laid down) BEFORE ANYONE GOES DOWN RANGE. Do not handle any firearms at this time. Shooters must use the walkways to and from the targets.
  • USE STATIONARY PAPER TARGETS ONLY. No bottles, cans, or other breakable targets may be used. Skeet shooting is prohibited.
  • NO TACER OR INCENDIARY TYPE AMMUNITION ALLOWED.
  • SHOOTERS MAY SHOOT ONLY AT THE TARGET RANGE IN LINE WITH THEIR POSITION. No shooting across the range. For example, persons located at the 100 yard benches shoot only at 100 yard target position.
  • SHOOTERS UNDER THE AGE OF 16 MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY AN ADULT.
  • NO SPECTATORS ALLOWED AT THE SHOOTING BENCHES ON THE FIRING LINE WHILE SHOOTING OCCURS.
  • IF OTHERS ARE WAITING TO SHOOT, TIME WILL BE LIMITED TO ONE (l) HOUR PER SHOOTER
  • PROPERLY DISPOSE OF ALL LITTER.
