Forest science in the South: Summary of accomplishments for fiscal year 2008

our workforce

In 2009, the Station continued efforts to protect civil rights, increase diversity, and improve the health and work environment of all employees. The Station’s Strategic Plan is key in that effort with its integration of inclusion and transparency in the fabric of the Station and its research. This year, the Station’s Executive Leadership members promoted many opportunities for interactive dialog throughout the organization, visiting field locations and speaking directly with employees.

In 2009, the Station expanded research and employment opportunities through various forms of outreach in an effort to increase representation in all age groups, disabilities, and demographics. We provided a diverse group of employees with many leadership development opportunities in the form of details with temporary promotions and through participation in a National Middle Leader Pilot Program.

The Station’s Civil Rights Director developed a comprehensive action plan for the Station and encouraged employees to contribute ideas that enhance the well-being of the Station. The Civil Rights Committee worked hard to get the word out, reaching employees through publication of a civil rights newsletter, through educational forums on diversity issues, and by expanding partnerships through the Station’s Partnership Enhancement Initiative. In addition, the Station’s field units as well as its headquarters offices benefitted from a diverse influx of summer intern students, who in turn found their academic experiences enriched by their Southern Research Station summer experience.

The Station values all employees and works proactively to provide resources to employees with special needs. The Southern Research Station’s commitment to the welfare of its employees extends to a Human Rights Perspective that cites the right of everyone in the workplace to be treated fairly, impartially,
and respectfully.

In 2009, the Station’s Engineering Group undertook a number of initiatives that improved the working environment while also reducing the Station’s energy consumption. The Station is constructing the Bent Creek Conference Center in Asheville, NC, and the Wood Products Insects Laboratory in Starkville, MS, with the goal of achieving Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification for sustainable buildings. The Station established Green Teams at its headquarters and at several Research Work Units to help ensure that operations are conducted in an environmentally responsible manner. The Station is also reducing its carbon footprint by upgrading the heating and cooling systems at several large facilities.

The Station continues to provide resources to ensure a safe work environment for employees. In 2009, the Station’s first full-time Safety and Health Manager was hired, a step that expands and enhances safety in all Station units.
