experimental forests

The Southern Research Station, headquartered in Asheville, NC, conducts forestry research that emphasizes measuring and monitoring forest resources; understanding ecosystem structure, function, and processes; managing resources for sustained and enhanced productivity; and protecting environmental quality. The Station conducts forestry research in 13 Southern States: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia although no research facilities are located in Kentucky and Oklahoma. Research is also conducted at the National Agroforestry Center (NAC) in Lincoln, NE, administered by the Station. The Station maintains 19 experimental forests located on or near National Forest System lands. Experimental forests represent a specific ecosystem or forest type, and present opportunities to study different approaches to sustaining forested ecosystems.
