Description: Forests cover much of the South, providing timber, wildlife habitat, recreation, and many other benefits to society. Concern about the effects of air pollution, drought, and other anthropogenic and natural stressors have increased in the past decade. In response to these concerns, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency developed and implemented the Forest Health Monitoring (FHM) program with the State Foresters and other State and Federal agencies as cooperators and partners in the FHM program.
