Description:	The 17 counties designated as east Oklahoma in this report encompass the main belt of commercial timberland in the State (fig. 1). Forests occupy 5.5 million acres or some 57 percent of the total land area. During the decade that elapsed between the 1956 and 1966 surveys, the acreage of forest land declined about 5 percent. The modest drop in forest area was largely due to land clearing for agriculture. About 4.8 million acres of the total forest area is commercial forest land. The remaining 13 percent is classified as noncommercial. Most of the latter acreage consists of land that is simply incapable of yielding crops of industrial wood.
