Mill Map and Directories
Data Used to Make the Mill Map and Directory: Forest Industry surveys are conducted on a periodic basis in
cooperation with each individual state forestry agencies. Timber Product Output (TPO) data such as mill
locations, directory type information, amount of logs received by county of origin, and disposal of mill
residue are collected at this time for the previous calendar year. Data for the Forest Industry survey and
subsequent abbreviated mill directory for Alabama were collected in 2004 for the calendar year 2003 in
cooperation with the Alabama Forestry Commission and the Forest Based Economic Development Consulting group
headed by Jim Gober. Mill level data for Louisiana and Mississippi were somewhat dated (last survey was
for 2002). Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) crews were in these states doing felled-tree utilization
surveys during the summer of 2005. The crews visited all of the mills in these two states on a
county-by-county basis to provide an updated mill list with contact information, as well as coordinates for
each mill for the current Primary Wood Producing Mill Map for the South. The mill directories for LA and
MS were based on the information collected in the summer of 2005.
