| Southern pine beetle (SPB) attacking a loblolly pine tree, with resin exuding from the hole made by the beetle. In most cases the attack succeeds, but in some trees sufficient resin is produced to "pitch out" or entomb the beetle. | Pitch tubes mark the locations of extensive SPB attacks on this loblolly pine. The resin oozing from these beetle attack sites serves as an important defense for the tree. | SPB galleries and larvae inside an attacked tree. The adult beetles producing winding, S-shaped galleries in the inner bark of the tree, laying eggs as they tunnel. The eggs hatch and the larvae consume the phloem tissue of the inner bark. |
