Entomology

Presence and absence of trees with bark beetle mortality is censused.  For each infected tree direction and distance from the grid point, tree species, bark beetle species responsible for mortality, tree diameter, and beetle attack stage (1, 2, or 3) are recorded.

In addition to national protocols a study of insect pollinators will examine the effect of fire and fire surrogate treatments on these insects in the understory plant community.

Trapping

  • Two malaise traps are operated in each plot for 5 days each month from March through October. Bees and butterflies are identified from the samples.

  • Test traps constructed from colored bowls will be used as an additional method of surveying for bees.

Visual Survey

  • The plots are surveyed three times (April, July and September) per year stopping at 5 randomly selected grid-points to do a visual survey of flowering plants. Surveys include recording flower abundance, plant species in flower, and pollinators present.

        Cavity Nesting Bees and Wasps

  • Nesting blocks are placed at two grid points in each plot to assess the abundance of nesting bees or wasps and whether or not fire or fire surrogate treatments affects the numbers of nests.
