Symposium SS15 - The promise of multi-stakeholder management initiatives: the case study of the Cerulean Warbler (Dendroica cerulea) in North and South America
As a part of the 4th North American Ornithological Conference, in Veracruz, Mexico, 3-7 October 2006, a committee of members of the Cerulean Warbler Technical Group, Jason Jones, Vassar College; Paul Hamel, USDA Forest Service; David Mehlman, The Nature Conservancy; and Petra Bohall Wood, West Virginia University; organized this symposium.
Symposium introduction: The Cerulean Warbler is currently the focus of considerable attention in eastern North American and in the Northern Andes of South America. This focused attention is due to significant range-wide population declines and to the potential widespread environmental and economic effects of management for and protection of Cerulean Warbler habitats. This attention also precipitated a marked increase in scientific research on this species and we have made great strides in our understanding of Cerulean Warbler ecology. Much of the credit for these strides lies in the efforts of the Cerulean Warbler Technical Group. Formed in 2001, the mission of this group was to develop a broad-based, technically sound, and proactive approach to the management and conservation of the Cerulean Warbler at all stages of the annual cycle. Drawing from academia, federal and state agencies, nongovernmental organizations and the forest-products industry, the Cerulean Warbler Technical Group is moving forward on the premise that the most successful conservation efforts are those that bring together broad partnerships that transcend boundaries between special interests and borders between nations. The efforts of the Cerulean Warbler Working Group exemplify the theme of the 2006 NAOC, "Wings Without Borders".
