April 2001

April saw a 20 percent increase in viewed pages and visitors plus a respectable increase in visit length. Most of the increase was in one-time visitors, the share of visitors who returned in the month decreased somewhat. Places visited on the site were similar to those in recent months with the exception of an unusually large number of visits to "robots.txt," a file usually only examined by web indexing robots. Speaking of indexing, the month of April saw extraordinarily frequent visits by the USDA search indexer (4,000 times for most pages). Records of visits from that server had to be removed from the log prior to analyzing for this report to reduce the file to tractable size. Also removed were records related to graphics files and to site administration.
