Economic Analysis of Stewardship Incentive Program Non-Timber Benefits

Investigators:

Thomas P. Holmes, Southern Research Station
John Bergstrom, University of Georgia

Description:

The Stewardship Incentive Program (SIP) is the first federal program designed to promote the integrated management of all resources on non-industrial private forest (NIPF) lands through the provision of technical assistance and financial incentives. It is targeted towards relatively small landowners (1,000 acres or less). Activities under SIP include: plan preparation, tree planting, forest stand improvement, agroforestry, soil and water improvement, riparian/wetland improvement, fisheries habitat, wildlife habitat and forest recreation. This project explores linkages between non-timber forestry practices (e.g., wildlife habitat improvement), the productions of goods and services of value to people (e.g., more wildlife) and benefit estimates of non-timber goods and services (e.g., wildlife values).
