Investigators:

Karen Lee Abt, Southern Research Station
John Greene, USDA Forest Service, Southern Research Station
Robert C. Abt, North Carolina State University

Description:

This study resulted in two chapters of the regional assessment for the Ozark-Ouachita Highlands of Arkansas, Oklahoma and Missouri. In preparation for the revision of the forest plans for the region's national forests, this assessment covers the terrestrial, atmospheric, aquatic and social/economic resources of this interior mountain region. Key findings include (1) through small relative to southern timber markets, the region will continue to grow in importance, (2) the National Forests are an important timber supplier in the region, though the forests harvest a smaller portion of their inventory each year than do private landowners, and (3) National Forests, as a whole, are minor contributors to the total regional economy, though some local effects could be significant and should be examined further during the planning process.
