Description:
EPA's Region III and the Office of Research and Development (ORD) are working jointly on a model ecosystem-based program for the Mid-Atlantic region. The Mid-Atlantic Integrated Assessment (MAIA) encompasses the mid-Atlantic region of the eastern United States and its watersheds, defined by the land and near-coastal area that includes all of EPA Region III and parts of Regions II and IV. The USDA Forest Service, Forest Health Monitoring Program is coordinating the analysis of forest ecosystems for the MAIA project. The overall objective of the socio-economic component of the MAIA is to describe current socio-economic conditions, assess, and analyze the impacts of the changes in the health of mid-Atlantic forest ecosystems on human welfare. The specific objectives are to fully develop the economic rationale and theory for measuring the human welfare impacts arising from changing forest ecosystem conditions, to specify the appropriate indicators for assessing socio-economic impacts in the MAIA region, to identify and obtain necessary data for measuring indicators of socio-economic impacts, cooperate with other investigators to display data and indicators in a GIS, and write a report on findings for the MAIA.
