Forecasting Land Use Change in the South: A spatially explicit analysis.

Investigators:

David N. Wear, Southern Research Station
Ian Hardie, University of Maryland
Peter Parks, Rutgers University

Description:

A key factor governing forest condition and sustainability especially in the South is how people decide to use their land. This study examines the allocation of land among various uses in the South and how allocations are influenced by markets and other factors. These factors include timber and agricultural markets as well as development pressures approximated by population density and income. The resulting models provide a spatially-explicit tool for forecasting land use in the South (this project was supported by funding from the 1999 RPA Assessment).
