Fiscal Year: The Federal government's calendar revolves around fiscal years, and near the end of each fiscal year we make a special effort to gather together and report research published in that year. The Fiscal Year field refers to the year that publication was reported. In some cases this is later than the publication year because of lags in publishing or reporting. Fiscal years are coded as two digits preceded by "fy".

Problem Area: Forest Service Research is organized around Research Work Units (often called "Projects"), each of which is assigned a set of broad research topics called Problem Areas. Problem Areas are reviewed and revised every five years through a process involving a Technical Assistance Visit. This Unit's last Technical Assistance visit was in 1998 so our current five problem areas only apply to years since then although we've made an effort to also assign these current problem areas to work accomplished before then. From 1993 to 1998 four Problem Areas described our research direction. No effort has been made to assign old problem area codes to newer publications. Coding of Problem Areas reflects the Problem Area numbers and the year those Problem Areas were established. For example, "pa98-4" refers to question four in the Problem Areas established in 1998.

Theme: The Southern Research Station includes dozens of Research Work Units including this one, and has designated six cross-cutting themes (CCTs) that address the issues identified during its strategic planning process and that engage Station scientists in multiple-level, multidisciplinary research. The six cross-cutting themes are:
| cctsoapp | Southern Appalachian Ecosystem Research and Sustainability |
|---|---|
| cctinthi | Sustainability and Productivity of the Interior Highlands Ecosystem |
| cctsopin | Sustainability and Productivity of Southern Pine Ecosystems |
| cctwetbh | Ecology and Management of Forested Wetlands, Bottomland Hardwoods, and Riparian Zones |
| cctrgnas | Landscape and Regional Integrated Assessment and Modeling |
| cctinmon | Inventory and Monitoring |
Source: The Source code indicates the level of participation of Project Scientists in a particular publication. Note that Federal employees cannot sign away copyright on publications to which they've contributed. Thus publications in the first two categories are more likely to be offered in full-text form.
| resunit | "Research Unit"- one of the Project members took the lead in authoring a publication |
|---|---|
| coop | "Cooperative"- the author list contains at least one Project member but not as primary author |
| extra | "Extramural"- the Project funded the work but the list of authors does not include a Project member |
Coverage: We've listed all the publications from this Unit since FY98. Recent publications should include abstracts if one exists and most offer links to the complete article as an Adobe PDF file (to view PDFs you need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader). Listings prior to FY98 are most complete for journal articles and many do not include abstracts. Listings do not extend earlier than FY93.
