Public Programs

Description:

The effectiveness and impacts of forest policy, programs, and regulations have come under increasing scrutiny the past few decades with the growing public concern over the sustainability of current forest management practices. In contrast, segments of the public have also expressed concern over the impacts of environmental laws and regulations on timber supply and the economic viability of forestry. Of particular concern in the Southern and Eastern U.S. are the impacts on non-industrial private forest landowners, who own the majority of forest land. The Research Work Unit is examining these issues on a variety of fronts including evaluations of the impacts of forestry incentive programs on non-industrial private landowners, policies to protect and conserve forested wetlands, the feasibility of instituting recreation user fees in National Forests, potential forest-related social and economic impacts that may result from global climate change and the impacts of policies designed to ameliorate global climate change, and the impacts of NAFTA on international trade of wood products.
