Rural Quality of Life and Economic Development

Description:

Forests affect rural communities not only by their presence in everyday rural life, but also through the economic development of wood products or tourism or other activities. Economic development occurs through attracting wood products firms, either primary or secondary processing, to a rural community or through establishment of destinations for forest-based tourism. Although these two outcomes are mutually exclusive in national park settings, both tourism and timber harvesting result when land is either privately owned or managed by the USDA Forest Service. Research is needed to evaluate the effects of forests on economic development resulting from increased timber or tourism, as well as the effects of both the new development and the existing forest on rural quality of life.
