Presidents in the Americas have expressed a desire to create a hemispheric free trade area, possibly building upon the NAFTA framework. A simple model is used to approximate effects of tariff reductions on United States forest products exports to Latin America and the Caribbean. Findings indicate little potential gains for U.S. exporters, but freer trade would benefit the region's consumers and could adversely affect its domestic forest products manufacturers, especially in South America.
