The Atlantic Coastal Forest of Brazil is being promoted as an 'ecotourism' destination by both conservation and tourism organizations. In order to evaluate this strategy for conservation of the forest, we studied the management and impact of tourism to protected areas in seven Brazilian states. This paper reports on the results of those case studies and offers some conclusions about the institutional arrangements most conducive to capturing conservation benefits from nature tourism. An appendix provides specific information on tourism attractions and regulations in the protected areas visited.
