check U.S. Wood-Using Mills -2005 for more current information!
These maps show the locations of different types of timber mills in the eastern United States. We use this information to analyse the spatial characteristics of timber markets. One such use is illustrated in our online presentation about Market Definition in the Southern Appalachians.
The maps are offered in several forms with differing resolutions and demands on bandwidth. The text links are the best starting point--clicking one will replace this text with the map you chose. Clicking "Introduction" brings this back. If you'd like to see a larger, more detailed map choose either the JPG or PDF icon below the text link. Both offer larger images and thus are shown fullscreen. You'll need to use the "Back" button to return to the menu. JPG images are about 100 KB and large enough that you'll need to scroll to see the entire image. PDF files are about 75 KB. This format allows you to zoom in or out and to print a copy more clearly than with the other two formats. However, PDF files require that you have an Adobe Acrobat Reader installed, available for free from Adobe.
These maps were assembled based on company name and address information collected by state forestry organizations and forwarded to the Forest Inventory and Monitoring units of the Southern and Northern Research Stations of the USDA Forest Service. We assembled the data from these sources and directly from the Texas Forest Service. Each state and region collect these data differently. We caution against comparisons between states and cannot certify the completeness of the data we are displaying.
Geocoding was used to translate mailing address information into approximate latitude and longitude. You can download the GIS coverages and tabular address information we used to make these maps as well as learn more about how the data were collected on our Mill Locations data page.
