These maps show the locations of different types of timber mills in the eastern United States. We use this information to analyse the spatial characteristics of timber markets. One such use is illustrated in our online presentation about <a href="/econ/present/jpp991/index.htm" target="_top">Market Definition in the Southern Appalachians</a>. You are encouraged to also check out a<a href="/econ/data/mills/mills.htm" target="_top">description of the data</a> used to generate these maps. From there youll be able to download the original data as tables and GIS coverages.

The maps are offered in three forms with differing resolutions and demands on bandwidth. The GIF files are quickest to use, images of about 40K. The JPG files offer larger images, about 100 KB, and big enough so you'll need to scroll some to see the entire image. The PDF files are about 75 KB in size and require an <a href="http://www.adobe.com/prodindex/acrobat/readstep.html">Adobe Acrobat Reader</a>. The software allows zooming and is generally the best choice for printing.
