Abstract:
These data describe the types and locations of wood mills in the Northeastern United States which might purchase logs or wood chips for primary processing. The mill location data here complement similar data for the North Central and Southern regions of the United States.
Purpose:
These data were assembled as part of a study to define hardwood timber markets in the Southern Appalachians (see the link below). The initial portion of the analysis required estimating the cost of transporting harvested timber from FIA plots to the nearest mill. The GIS coverage of mill locations was used to quantify direct distance from plot to nearest mill, adjusted to road distance using a circuity factor.

Data for pulp mills in this dataset were updated based on a USDA Forest Products Laboratory survey conducted in 2000. Some effort was made to update name, address and operational status of pulpmills as of March 2005. For all other mill types no effort was made to update their status beyond the year indicated in the field FIA_SURVEY. Some mills may have closed or idled, relocated, or changed their name or address since their information was collected.
