A Symposium Celebrating
75 Years of Watershed Research at the
Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory
The Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory is celebrating its 75th year of continuous operation. Established as a USDA Forest Service Experimental Forest in 1934, Coweeta has been a world leader in developing an interdisciplinary and holistic understanding of forest watershed processes and management options to protect, enhance, or restore watershed functions. Research at Coweeta spans the continuum of basic and applied science and developing and testing theory. Coweeta became a National Science Foundation Long-Term Ecological Research site in 1980 and has an even longer association with the University of Georgia. More than 250 students have received graduate degrees from research conducted at Coweeta and numerous undergraduates have participated in summer internships. Collaborative research includes partnerships with land managers, state and federal agencies, and universities throughout the US and the world.
The 75th Anniversary symposium will focus on discussions of (1) the development of watershed science and (2) the role of watershed science in addressing the challenges of the 21st century. Topics will include issues related to climate change, water supply, biodiversity and invasive species, and land use change. Coweeta alumni and collaborators are especially encouraged to attend.
The symposium will include:
- A Celebration and Recognition Ceremony
- Keynote Presentations
- Invited and Contributed Papers
- Optional Field Tour of the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory
- Publication of Key Synthesis Papers
