Aging Mussel Shells

Mussel shell half showing the rings

We've all heard of counting a tree's rings to determine its age, but did you know a similar procedure is used to determine the age of mussel shells? CBHR technician Mickey Bland takes us through the process using a technique known as thin sectioning. Also, learn about Dr. Wendell Haag's upcoming publications related to shell rings.

Alabama Shad Study

Dr. Susan Adams holding shad sampled in Alabama

Dr. Susan Adams' research on Alabama shad populations, originally intended to support Alabama shad restoration efforts, has also proved invaluable in guaging the effect of Hurricane Katrina on inland fisheries. Her research was recently featured in the April/May 2007 newsletter for the American Sportfishing Association in an article entitled "Alabama Shad Research has Double Benefits" (see pp. 21-22).
