Slide 1 of 6
A mature red oak-sweetgum stand along the Saline River in southeastern Arkansas was clearcut in the winter of 1956-57. The new stand at age 9 consists primarily of very thick clumps of sweetgum sprouts. At this stage of development, the new stand is dominated by sweetgum, river birch, and American hornbeam (bluebeech). Oaks are present in the stand, but are small and inconspicuous.
