CBHR Scientists Receive Director's Awards
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Paul Hamel and Dr. Nathan Schiff for capturing the 2008 Director's Award for Partnerships. Dr. Hamel also received the 2008 Director's Award in the Global Stewardship category.
We are pleased to welcome Dr. Tracy Hawkins and Dr. Brian Lockhart back to the Center. Tracy and Brian worked for us in post-doctoral positions for the past five years leading various aspects of our pondberry studies. During that time, they each demonstrated their capabilities in conducting high-quality scientific work and contributing to the mission of the Center. Tracy moves into the Research Ecologist (seed biologist) position in Starkville, MS, and Brian has accepted the Research Forester (natural stand regeneration) position in Stoneville, MS. They both report to their new jobs on Monday September 29, 2008.

Dr. Mark Eisenbies to Join CBHR Staff
Dr. Mark H. Eisenbies begins October 1, 2007 as a Research Hydrologist at the Center for Bottomland Hardwoods Research and will be located in the forestry school on the campus of Mississippi State University. Dr. Eisenbies completed his Ph.D. degree in forestry in 2004 at Virginia Tech, where he also received his B.S. degree (in forestry and wildlife). Mark's Master's degree in soil science is from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Mark is no stranger to the Southern Research Station having worked for the Center for Forested Wetlands Research, Charleston, S.C. from 1996 to early 2000, when he decided to go back to school for his Ph.D. Mark will be researching issues related to the hydrology of lowland forests and landscapes in the Mississippi Alluvial Floodplain, and other associated systems.
Dr. Wendell Haag wins Chief's Early Career Scientist's Award
CBHR's Dr. Wendell Haag has been awarded the Forest Service Chief's Early Career Scientist's Award. Dr. Haag's research program has made valuable contributions to our knowledge of mussel ecology, most notably in the following five areas: population dynamics of freshwater mussels, fish hosts and reproductive biology of freshwater mussels, life histories and community ecology of freshwater mussels, sampling methods for freshwater mussels, and biochronology of shell rings in freshwater mussels.
Dr. Mason "Buck" Bryant to Join CBHR Staff
Dr. Mason "Buck" Bryant has accepted the position of Research Fisheries Biologist at the Center for Bottomland Hardwoods Research. Dr. Bryant is transferring from Juneau, AK where he has been a Research Fisheries Biologist with the Aquatic and Land Interactions Program of the Pacific Northwest Research Station, US Forest Service. Buck is a native of Maine, with an undergraduate degree from the University of Maine, Orono, and a Ph.D. from the University of Washington, Seattle. Dr. Bryant will be joining the Center staff in Stoneville on June 25, 2007 and will study the fisheries of streams and rivers in the Mississippi Alluvial floodplain.
Dr. Ray Souter to Join CBHR Staff
Dr. Ray Souter has accepted the position of Research Forester-Biometrician in the Center for Bottomland Hardwoods Research. Ray will report to Stoneville on August 6, 2007 to begin work on lowland hardwood growth and yield research. Ray is a native of Magnolia, AR, a graduate of the University of Arkansas at Monticello in forest science, and has his Master's and Ph.D. degrees in forest resources from the University of Georgia.
Cathy Jenkins, Support Services Assistant at our Oxford, MS facility, and other members of the Administrative Realignment Team were awarded the 2007 Southern Research Station Director's Award for Excellence in Providing Business Operations Support.
Dr. Wendell Haag wins 2007 SRS Director's Award
Dr. Wendell Haag, a Fishery Research Biologist at our Oxford, MS facility, has won the 2007 Southern Research Station Director's Award in the Early Career Scientist category "For high productivity of quality research on freshwater mussels as an early-career scientist with the Aquatic and Terrestrial Fauna Team, Center for Bottomland Hardwoods Research." 2006 Natural Resources Stewardship Award
The USDA Forest Service-Savannah River Carolina Bay Restoration and Banking Project Team was recently selected from among six nominations to receive the 2006 Regional Forester's Natural Resources Stewardship Award for their innovative design of practical research alternatives for restoring 16 drained Carolina bays. Among the 22 people involved are SRS (or former SRS) scientists Christopher Barton, John Kilgo, and CBHR's own Diane De Steven. This nomination document contains details about the project along with several before and after pictures of the restored bays. Compass, the Southern Research Station's quarterly science magazine, will feature articles highlighting some of Dr. De Steven's and Dr. Kilgo's research on this project in their next issue.

Former CBHR Project Leader Receives Forest Service Chief's Award
Former CBHR Project Leader, John Stanturf, was recently honored with a prestigious USDA Forest Service Chief’s Award for his leadership in developing methods for restoration of temperate forests and for developing innovative methods to rehabilitate and restore southern forest ecosystems.

Dr. Susan B. Adams received her 2005 Rise to the Future Award for Professional Excellence in Research from Forest Service Chief Dale Bosworth during an awards ceremony on April 26, 2006 in Washington. Our original award announcement has been updated with a photo of Susie and the Chief.
