Duties, Current
Research, and Other Professional Interests:
I have broad interests in all of the
silvicultural aspects of natural stands on upland sites—from seeds to
sawtimber. My research has mainly focused on creating and managing
pine and pine-hardwood stands but has also included some smaller
studies dealing with establishing natural oak reproduction. My larger
research studies extend from the Ouachita Mountains in central
Arkansas to the Coastal Plain of Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
These studies are testing both even-aged and uneven-aged reproduction
cutting methods with regeneration goals ranging from pine to
pine-hardwood mixtures. With collaborators from Mississippi State
University and UAM, we have overlaid interdisciplinary research within
these studies to investigate wildlife habitat and stand nutrition. In
addition, a series of small-scale studies were established locally to
address various aspects of the germination ecology of the oaks,
loblolly and shortleaf pines, and their competitors.
